The goal of this course is to familiarize participants with the leading cases in European competition policy involving platform markets. The first two sessions will review basic notions of EU Competition Law and introduce students to the economics of multi-sided markets and platform competition. The remaining sessions will be structured in two parts. We will start with an overview of a relevant economic concepts and a description of the analytical methods employed to assess their impact. In the second part of the lecture the practical use of these methods and tools will be illustrated by reference to a major EC competition case.

Cani Fernández is Partner at Cuatrecasas, Competition and European Law; former referendaire European Court of Justice; Vice President of the Economics Committee of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association; Council liaison officer at the International Bar Association; teaches competition law at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and the Toulouse School of Economics and European law at Universidad Carlos III, Madrid.

Jorge Padilla is Senior Managing Director at Compass Lexecon; teaches competition economics at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and the Toulouse School of Economics. Co-author of book “the Law and Economics of Article 102 TFEU” and many other essays on Industrial Organization and Competition Policy. Jorge has been involved or is actively involved in many of the cases covered in this course.
